So you like the idea of working from home? You really want to get into freelance work? I do, too. That is why I signed up for oDesk. But just so you know, working from home has its downsides. It won't be easy the first time but once you've figured out how to manage your time and how you can make it work for you then you might like doing freelance work from home.
Before you jump right to it, think about both the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. Work it out in your head. Can you make it work? Will you have the patience?
Ask yourself some more. Why do you want to work online? Are you not happy with your current job? Are you not going to miss your colleagues and the camaraderie at work?
I know from experience that oDesk is not for everyone. If you are single, if you have your own room and can work in total isolation, you will probably fit right in and enjoy the solitude. Working online won't be a problem for you but if you are the type who likes to be around people, it might take some getting used to.
Now how about if you are married and you have your kids to look after? You also have the house to clean and keep organized. You see what I mean? So unless you have someone who can help around the house and make things easy for you (your mother or your mother-in-law perhaps?), working online could be a problem. Take my situation for example. I have a 2 year old (updated: March 3, 2014) and I don't have anyone else who could take over when I need a break from my mommy duties. My husband also works from home and can only do so much. Are you wondering how we even manage to find the time to work without getting distracted? Believe me, it's NOT easy. I have to be a Super Mom to get to where I am now. Sometimes I feel like pulling my hair and cry out in sheer frustration but I have to keep my cool in front of my son. My two year old sees everything and follows every single thing I say or do. You see the different scenarios when you work from home? Can you picture out the kind of situation you will be when you finally quit your job and join us here on the 'other side'? It could be a walk in the park for you if you are THAT sort of person who can turn around any difficult situation into something good and still manage a smile and whistle a tune. Are YOU that person?
See the whole picture before you jump and join the bandwagon. oDesk is a wonderful way to earn money while working from home but like I said, it is not for everyone.
